My journey with fibers began with my grandmother who taught me to embroider when I was six years old. Later my mother taught me dress making and eventually I learned to knit and quilt as well. Working with the color, texture and pattern of fibers were exciting to me.
Much later I began my second career by going to art school intending to become a painter. When I began my first fiber arts class at Eastern Michigan University, I immediately felt at home in the fibers studio. By working in media traditionally used by women I felt connected to women past and present who expressed themselves through work with fibers. The media themselves were a means to exploring feminine history, issues and creativity.
Often working on a small scale both my two dimensional and three dimensional pieces contain hand dyed fabrics, beads and other embellishment. Going forward I would like to explore the use of repurposed fibers that have their own history before my process begins.
